200G QSFP56 InfiniBand HDR Overview
The 200G QSFP56 InfiniBand HDR category contains two optical transceiver modules for 200Gb/s connections in InfiniBand HDR networks. Both models use the QSFP56 form factor and support DOM monitoring for deployment with ConnectX-6 adapters and Mellanox Quantum™ HDR InfiniBand switches. The series includes one multimode transceiver and one single-mode transceiver, covering transmission distances from 100m to 2km. Depending on the optical specification, the modules use either an MTP/MPO-12 APC connector or a duplex LC/UPC connector. They support data center and high-performance computing networks, enterprise core and aggregation layers, and service provider applications.
Q56-HDR-SR4 is a 200GBASE-SR4 multimode optical transceiver for 200Gb/s InfiniBand HDR links. It operates at 850nm over multimode fiber and uses an MTP/MPO-12 APC connector for parallel optical transmission up to 100m. The QSFP56 module supports DOM monitoring and is designed for ConnectX-6 adapters and Mellanox Quantum™ HDR InfiniBand switches in data center, high-performance computing, enterprise core and aggregation, and service provider networks.
Q56-HDR-FR4 is a 200GBASE-FR4 single-mode optical transceiver for 200Gb/s InfiniBand HDR connections. It operates at 1310nm over single-mode fiber and uses a duplex LC/UPC connector for transmission distances up to 2km. Packaged in the QSFP56 form factor with DOM monitoring, the module supports ConnectX-6 adapters and Mellanox Quantum™ HDR InfiniBand switches across data center, high-performance computing, enterprise core and aggregation, and service provider environments.
- What is the practical link difference between Q56-HDR-SR4 and Q56-HDR-FR4 in a 200G InfiniBand HDR deployment?
Q56-HDR-SR4 supports up to 100m over 850nm multimode fiber with a parallel MTP/MPO-12 interface. Q56-HDR-FR4 extends the link to 2km over 1310nm single-mode fiber with a duplex LC/UPC interface.
- Can Q56-HDR-SR4 carry a full 200Gb/s HDR link through one MTP/MPO-12 connection?
Yes. Q56-HDR-SR4 uses four parallel optical lanes, with each lane carrying a 50Gb/s PAM4 signal. Together, the four lanes provide the 200Gb/s SR4 link over multimode fiber for distances up to 100m.
- Why does Q56-HDR-FR4 use duplex LC/UPC instead of the parallel MTP/MPO interface used by Q56-HDR-SR4?
Q56-HDR-FR4 combines four 50Gb/s optical channels using CWDM and transmits them over one single-mode fiber pair. This wavelength-multiplexed architecture allows the 200G FR4 link to use a duplex LC/UPC interface.
- Can Q56-HDR-SR4 and Q56-HDR-FR4 use the same installed fiber cabling and patch cords?
No. Q56-HDR-SR4 requires multimode fiber with an MTP/MPO-12 connection, while Q56-HDR-FR4 requires single-mode fiber with a duplex LC/UPC connection. The fiber media and connector configurations are not interchangeable.
- What operating information can DOM report for Q56-HDR-SR4 and Q56-HDR-FR4?
DOM can report module temperature, supply voltage, laser bias current, and optical transmit and receive power levels. The management interface also provides associated warning and alarm thresholds for supported operating parameters.
- How do Q56-HDR-SR4 and Q56-HDR-FR4 deliver 200Gb/s through the QSFP56 form factor?
Both use four 50Gb/s PAM4 electrical lanes to create the 200Gb/s interface. Q56-HDR-SR4 maintains four parallel optical paths, whereas Q56-HDR-FR4 converts the data into four CWDM wavelengths carried over a duplex single-mode link.
- Can Q56-HDR-SR4 and Q56-HDR-FR4 be inserted into an operating compatible QSFP56 system without shutting it down?
Yes. Both use a hot-pluggable QSFP56 form factor, allowing installation or replacement without powering down a compatible host system that supports 200Gb/s InfiniBand HDR optical modules.
