No. The SN3420 provides 48 SFP28 downlink ports that can operate at 10GbE or 25GbE. Existing 10GbE hosts can remain in service while server NICs are upgraded to 25GbE over time.
Yes. With all 48 downlinks operating at 25GbE and all 12 QSFP28 uplinks operating at 100GbE, both the host-facing and uplink bandwidth total 1.2Tbps. This is a practical design for racks where avoiding ToR uplink contention is important. Recalculate the ratio if any 100GbE ports are reserved or repurposed for breakout connections.
Yes. All 12 QSFP28 ports can be broken out into 4×25GbE connections, allowing up to 96 logical 25GbE interfaces on the platform. They can also operate as 2×50GbE links. Unlike some other switch designs, QSFP28 breakout on the SN3420 does not block adjacent ports. Once a port is broken out, however, it is no longer available as one independent 100GbE uplink.
Yes. A QSFP-to-SFP adapter, or QSA, can convert a QSFP28 port into one individual SFP interface. This is useful for a small number of standalone 10GbE or 25GbE connections. The port speed must be configured manually in Onyx, and the same port should not also be configured as a breakout interface.
