Find answers to common questions about our products.
Not necessarily. QM8700 includes an onboard Subnet Manager for fabric discovery, initialization, and routing in small or mid-sized InfiniBand environments. Host-based OpenSM or NVIDIA UFM can also be used when centralized management or larger-scale fabric operations are required.
A primary and backup management design can be used, but the fabric should not have multiple competing active Subnet Managers. Define one primary SM and keep only the required standby instance to avoid inconsistent routing, LID assignment, or fabric initialization behavior.
It can be used in mixed-generation environments when the adapter model, negotiated speed, cable or transceiver type, and firmware versions are compatible. For EDR 100G links, interoperability testing is recommended, especially when using third-party connectivity products or longer optical links.
InfiniBand uses P_Keys, or Partition Keys, rather than Ethernet VLANs. Servers, storage nodes, or application groups can be assigned to separate partitions so that communication is limited to members of the same P_Key. The default P_Key is commonly used for baseline management and fabric connectivity, so it should not be changed without evaluating the management impact.
