Is the Q3400-RA designed for leaf, spine, or both roles?
It can be deployed as either a leaf or spine switch in a large-scale XDR InfiniBand fabric. With 144 800Gb/s XDR ports and high radix, it is well suited to two-tier fat-tree AI cluster designs. The final role depends on cluster size, NIC speed, and oversubscription requirements.
How do 72 OSFP cages provide 144 800Gb/s ports, and how should cabling be planned?
Each OSFP cage provides two independent 800Gb/s XDR links, giving the switch 144 logical 800Gb/s ports across 72 physical cages. Cable and optics selection should be based on endpoint count, link distance, and the required twin-port OSFP connectivity.
Is UFM required to operate the Q3400-RA?
An InfiniBand fabric requires a Subnet Manager for initialization, routing, and partitioning. The Q3400-RA is a managed switch running NVOS, while UFM is recommended for production AI clusters that need centralized monitoring, alerting, performance visibility, and fabric operations.
What rack, power, and cooling requirements should be checked before installation?
Reserve 4U in a standard 19-inch rack and ensure sufficient rack depth, load capacity, and C2P airflow clearance. The switch uses eight 200–240Vac power supplies, while power cords are supplied separately. With active cables, total system power can reach up to 7kW, so PDU and circuit capacity should be verified in advance.
