Find answers to common questions about our products.

Is MCX555A-ECAT still a good fit for brand-new AI cluster builds?

It is better suited for maintaining or expanding EDR InfiniBand and 100GbE environments, not for new HDR, NDR, or 400G-class fabrics. NVIDIA’s ConnectX-5 InfiniBand/Ethernet manual lists these OPNs as end-of-life ordering part numbers.

How is MCX555A-ECAT different from MCX556A-ECAT?

MCX555A-ECAT is the single-port QSFP28 version, while MCX556A-ECAT is the dual-port QSFP28 version. Both are ConnectX-5 VPI cards for EDR IB and 100GbE, but MCX555A-ECAT is intended for one 100G-class server link.

Can this adapter be used for HDR 200G InfiniBand or NDR?

No. MCX555A-ECAT is an EDR-generation adapter, with InfiniBand rates up to EDR and Ethernet rates up to 100GbE. For HDR 200G, NDR, or 400G networks, choose a newer ConnectX-6 or ConnectX-7 platform instead.

Is it useful when an existing cluster still has FDR or QDR InfiniBand equipment?

Yes. NVIDIA lists InfiniBand auto-negotiation support across SDR, DDR, QDR, FDR10, FDR, and EDR. That makes this card useful for mixed-generation InfiniBand maintenance or phased upgrades, as long as the switch and cable support the target speed.
