MCX555A-ECAT is the single-port QSFP28 version, while MCX556A-ECAT is the dual-port QSFP28 version. Both are ConnectX-5 VPI cards for EDR IB and 100GbE, but MCX555A-ECAT is intended for one 100G-class server link.
This is the main limitation to check. NVIDIA specifies that PCIe Gen3 x16 provides a maximum bus bandwidth of 128Gb/s, so the dual-port MCX556A-ECAT cannot provide a full 200Gb/s aggregate host path when both ports are fully loaded.
A dual-port adapter is useful for dual-rail InfiniBand, fabric redundancy, or separating storage and compute traffic while keeping one PCIe slot. It can simplify server layout when the platform has limited PCIe slots.
