Is MCX653106A-ECAT a full 200G HDR adapter?
No. This model is a 100Gb/s-class ConnectX-6 VPI adapter that supports HDR100, EDR InfiniBand, and 100GbE. If your fabric requires full 200G HDR or 200GbE, choose an HDAT-class ConnectX-6 VPI model instead.
The card uses QSFP56. Does that mean I need 200G optics?
No. QSFP56 describes the port form factor, but this SKU is specified for 100Gb/s links. Use HDR100, EDR, or 100GbE-compatible cables and optics rather than assuming every QSFP56 module is suitable.
Do I need a Subnet Manager when using this card in InfiniBand mode?
Yes. An InfiniBand subnet requires a Subnet Manager to discover, activate, and manage the fabric; OpenSM may run on a host or a managed switch depending on the deployment. Ethernet mode does not use an InfiniBand Subnet Manager.
When does a VPI card make more sense than an Ethernet-only 100G NIC?
Choose this VPI model when the same server platform may need InfiniBand for HPC or storage traffic and Ethernet for 100GbE/RoCE environments. If the deployment will only use standard Ethernet, an EN-only adapter may be simpler.
